Liam McKenna

Author's story

L. B. McKenna is a 61-year-old semi-retired teacher of Religion from Belfast, Ireland. With a Master’s degree in Education and decades of teaching and mentoring, McKenna brings wit and wisdom to his writing. A father to two grown sons, Eoin and Emmet, he now focuses on storytelling, drawing on his rich life experiences, humor, and fascination with life’s deeper questions.
Semi-Detached is McKenna’s debut novel, with three more works in progress. This first book introduces an author who combines sharp observation with raw honesty. Inspired by existentialist thought, particularly Albert Camus’ reflections on the absurd—“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become absolutely free”—McKenna crafts a story that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Set in a world that feels familiar yet revealing, Semi-Detached follows Colin, a man grappling with friendships, temptations, and choices that challenge the life he thought he had mastered. Told with humor, humanity, and a keen eye for detail, the novel embraces the absurdities of modern life, highlighting how ordinary moments can turn extraordinary.
McKenna’s authentic voice reflects the dry wit of Belfast and the universal struggles of being human. His storytelling is accessible yet rich, packed with witty dialogue, memorable characters, and scenes that stay with readers long after the book is closed.
This is just the start of McKenna’s literary journey, but it already marks the arrival of a distinctive new voice in contemporary fiction.
